A weekly brief for men building careers and families.
Gentlemen, good afternoon. And welcome to June - championship month - Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, College World Series and then the U.S. Open to cap it off. If that doesn’t get you going, I’m not sure what will. Let’s finish the week strong! -C
The standard to carry this week: Get in a different room.
THE QUOTE
“Luck flows through people and travels by conversation. The people you talk to determine the opportunities you find. Keep talking to the same people, keep finding the same opportunities. Start talking to new people, start finding new opportunities. If you want different luck, start walking into different rooms.”
THE TAKE
The world wants you to shut your door, sit on your couch, and check out. This quote is a good slap in the face.
If things feel stuck (at work, at home, anywhere) a big part of the fix is getting around different people. I don't buy the introvert/extrovert excuse. That's a personality trait, not a life sentence. If you want something, you have to go get it. And most of the time, what you're looking for is sitting inside a relationship you haven't built yet.
Think about a bad sports team that keeps losing. At some point, you change the coach. Same idea here. If the same circle keeps producing the same results, it might be time to walk into a different room.
THE MOVE
Throughout the next week, identify one or two people that you see around but have never engaged OR if you know what you want and know the person who has what you want, go strike up a conversation. Who cares if it is the CEO or any other executive leader. Just don’t lead with “hey you have something I want” lol.
Instead, lead with things people love talking about - sports, their kids, any news of the day. Bring them into your world and without being weird or oversharing kinda act like you are friends with them already.
Know a man who'd find this useful? Forward this to him.
Hold the line,
-Collier
